Chinese New Year's Eve dinner is the most important family gathering of the year. While very much a reunion at home, many families go out to have celebratory gatherings in Chinese restaurants.

The sounds of firecrackers and the waft of gunpowder will fill the air on New Year's Eve in Melbourne's Chinatown as the lions drive away the evil spirits to welcome a prosperous and peaceful new year.

From 10.30pm gather around the corner of Little Bourke and Russell Streets where the Chinatown Countdown begins. A DJ, accompanied by street performers, will set the scene.

The clock will countdown to midnight, culminating in a lion dance to ring in the Year of the Goat.
