Melbourne Chinese New Year
The sound of firecrackers and fireworks, drums and dragons will sweep through the streets of Melbourne from the 15th – 25th of February when the third annual Chinese New Year Melbourne Festival returns to celebrate the Year of the Dog
For 10 days, Melbourne will be bursting at the seams to offer locals and visitors alike a range of festive activities, entertainment and abundant feasts to enjoy.
In Melbourne, Chinese New Year Celebrations are continually very special and in 2018, as we welcome in the Year of the Dog, the city will come alive with food, fun and festivities. Celebrating the city’s wonderful multicultural history, the Chinese New Year Melbourne Festival is an opportunity for all of Melbourne to unite and celebrate this age-old culture.
We invite you to revel in the spectacular lighting installations that will illuminate the world’s most liveable city along its main streets, along its waterways and Queen Victoria Market, one of Melbourne’s most iconic tourist attractions.
The year of the Dog is an opportunity to celebrate the love, loyalty and courage present in our family, our friends and in our communities. So, with Dogs in mind, Melbourne will come alive with captivating firecrackers, enchanting feasts and fiery dragons brought together by a myriad of cultural delights.
This Chinese New Year Celebration receives tremendous support from the Victorian Government and The Victorian Multicultural Commission and from businesses within the Chinese community of Melbourne. The 2018 Chinese New Year Melbourne Festival will bring Melbourne to life and provide a chance for this glorious city to share in the delights of this extremely special festive season.

As we enter the Year of the Dog, it is with great anticipation that I send my best wishes for a successful 2018 Chinese New Year Festival.
The Victorian Government is committed to supporting all Victorians to feel connected to their culture, which includes coming together at traditional festivals and events.
For our state’s Chinese Community, Chinese New Year is an important time to pay respect to ancestors and share in timeless traditions and customs.
Each year, all Victorians are fortunate to have the opportunity to take part in Chinese New Year festivities.
Indeed our enthusiasm for this festival is a shining example of how well we embrace one another’s traditions in our state.
The Year of the Dog invites us all to reflect on the values of loyalty and honesty and reminds us of the importance of embracing solidarity and togetherness – a fitting focus for our inclusive multicultural society.

One of our city’s favourite events, the Chinese New Year Festival Melbourne 2018, unites families and friends to celebrate Chinese culture and traditions across the city.
Soak up the vibrant atmosphere as you wander through art exhibitions, scope out the spectacular lighting installations and cultural dances, get involved in workshops or try your hand at the ancient art of lantern painting or Chinese square dancing.
Taste your way through an array of mouth-watering food and take the kids along to a storytelling session to ring in the Year of the Dog. And, don’t miss the New Year’s Countdown at Queensbridge Square.
This colourful festival is one of many celebrations of Melbourne’s diverse multicultural community. We are home to people from more than 200 countries, who speak 260 languages and dialects and practice 135 religious faiths. But we are one Melbourne.
Chinese people have helped build and shape our great city, and the City of Melbourne is proud to honour these contributions through our support of Chinese New Year festivities.
In this most auspicious Year of the Dog, I wish you all a safe, productive and prosperous year ahead.
